Virtual Mentoring

Join us for a dynamic session of Speed Mentoring ‎- where affiliates will be able to connect with senior leaders across government and Private Industry in order to gain new perspectives on a wide range of leadership topics. Bring your most burning questions and connect with your colleagues!

How it works: This is a one-hour mentoring session. You will start off with your first mentor. Then, every fifteen minutes,  your mentor will leave and and a new mentor will join you. These three mentors will share their‎ best practices and insights on an array of relevant topics for today's workplace.

Take notes, as this discussion will reveal years of experienced insight.

Meet the Mentors

Joann Shields | Chief Information Officer & Director General, Infrastructure Canada

Joann Shields is an innovative leader with over 25 years in Information Management / Information Technology (IMIT) across both the public and private sectors.  Her knowledge and experience cover a broad range of topics including organizational effectiveness, change management, agile mindsets and practices, strategy, digital government, culture and leadership, stakeholder engagement and technology.  She has a solid track record in building high performing teams, leading transformation initiatives and implementing partnerships while employing a participative management style.    

Currently, Joann is the Director General of IMIT, Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Infrastructure Canada - the department responsible for providing long-term predictable support to help Canadians benefit from world-class, modern public infrastructure.  Before taking on this position in July 2019, Joann worked in digital transformation at Innovation Science and Economic Development, in change and program delivery at Shared Services Canada (SSC), crown corporations and in an extensive range of IMIT related roles within the Chief Information Officer Branch of Treasury Board Secretariat.  

Joann earned her Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration degrees from Carleton University, both with a specialization in Information Systems and Organizational Behaviour with a thesis focused on Transformational Change in the Public Sector.   On a personal note, she is an avid skier, loves walking her dogs in the woods and spends a lot of time cheering her kids on in pretty much every sport out there.  

 


Dugald Topshee |Chief Information Officer, Justice Canada

After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Philosophy, Dugald’s love of programming led him to a career in Information Technology. He worked in the telecommunications space: for British Telecom in Europe and Nortel Networks in Ottawa before founding his own consulting company in 2001. 

Dugald spent eight years developing solutions for clients in the public and private sector before accepting a job with the Department of Justice Canada, one of his former clients. Dugald has held a variety of positions with the Department of Justice Canada and was appointed to his current position as its Chief Information Officer in 2018.

 


Pauline Martin | Industry Executive, Microsoft

Pauline Martin is an Industry Executive who bridges the gap between government transformation opportunities and the emerging technology solution ecosystem to deliver results.  With over 25 years of experience in marketing, account management, business development and sales leadership at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Microsoft Canada, she has focused on building a deep understanding of her customers’ industry-specific reality, whether it be Communications and Media, Healthcare, Public Sector or most recently Autonomous Vehicles.  A graduate of the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Pauline is happiest when working with an extended team including her own organization, ecosystem partners and customers themselves to deliver solutions that truly improve the lives of public servants and Canadian citizens.
