The Ottawa Hospital:  21st Century Healthcare & Technology

Join us for an exciting discussion with the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) on how rapid transformations across technology, business and research are changing the way healthcare is delivered for citizens in our community.  TOH is a leading North American health-care centre with a robust electronic health-care system and world class operating model.  TOH will share the healthcare context and their innovation strategy, as well as the dynamic leadership necessary to drive IT change across large multi-jurisdictional organizations.  

Speakers:

Cameron Love, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, The Ottawa Hospital

Cameron Love received his Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa.  After receiving his master’s, Cameron worked at the Ministry of Health until joining The Ottawa Hospital in 1998.

Cameron has been responsible for managing a variety of operational departments leading up to his current position as Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer. In his current portfolio, Cameron manages and leads the operation of variety of clinical programs including Critical Care, Medicine, Nephrology, Geriatrics, Neurosciences, Ambulatory Care, Eye Care, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mental Health and Rehabilitation. In addition, Cameron is responsible for the operation of Support Services including Logistical Services, Housekeeping, Nutrition and Food Services, Facilities Management and Planning, which to date has included the implementation of an approximate $750 M capital development plan. Finally, Cameron’s portfolio also includes a number of professional services including Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacy, Radiation Safety, Social Work, Respiratory Therapy and Spiritual Care.

Most recently, from December 2009 to September 2010, Cameron was also appointed as the interim CEO of the Champlain Community Care Access Center.  Cameron was responsible for overseeing the implementation of the operational review recommendations, which were completed over his nine month term.

Cameron participates actively in the education of future health care executives in his role as a preceptor to residents of the University of Ottawa’s Masters in Health Administration Program and leads and participates in a number of regional initiatives associated with the planning of clinical and support services within the Champlain region.

Cameron is also a member of the Canadian College of Health Services Executives (CCHSE) and is involved in many regional and provincial initiatives, committees and task forces.


Shafique Shamji, Executive Vice-President & Chief Information Officer, The Ottawa Hospital

Shafique Shamji is currently the Executive Vice-President and Chief Information Officer at The Ottawa Hospital. Prior to this role, Mr. Shamji has served as: Chief Operating Officer at Macadamian Technologies headquartered in Gatineau, Québec with offices in Toronto, California, Armenia and Romania; President of Privasoft Corporation, headquartered in Ottawa, Canada with offices in Arlington, Virginia and Brentford, United Kingdom; and, President of Time iCR in Ottawa, which was acquired by Sprint Canada/Rogers Communications where Mr. Shamji served as the Vice-President of Professional Services.

With over 25 years of experience in Telecommunications, IS/IT, and Software Development, Mr. Shamji has also spent several years in the US where he was Chief Operating Officer of TeleHub Network Services in Chicago; President of LD Exchange in Santa Ana California; and Vice-President of Network Services for Fidelity National Information Systems in Irvine, California. Prior to that, Mr. Shamji held several senior level positions in Toronto with AT&T Canada, Unitel Communications as well as Engineering and Product Marketing positions with Nortel in Brampton, Ontario.

Mr. Shamji is an active member of the Aga Khan Volunteer Corps of Ottawa, and was a previous Judge in the Telfer School of Management Leadership Challenge. He has also served on the Boards of TeleHub Network Services, Time iCR, Privasoft and was a member of the Governance Committee of the Ottawa Montessori School Board. Mr. Shamji has a Computer Engineering degree from McMaster University in Hamilton and received his Professional Engineering designation in 1991.


Dr. Alan Forster, MD, FRCPC, MSc, Vice-President, Quality, Performance and Population Health, Ottawa Hospital

Alan J. Forster MD, FRCPC, MSc is a general internist; Vice President, Innovation and Quality at the Ottawa Hospital; Vice Chair Quality and Clinical Services, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

His research focuses on patient safety and quality improvement. He is also leading in the development of a hospital data warehouse, which will serve as a supporting infrastructure for a research program in patient safety and quality of care.  

He has received several prestigious awards recognizing his work within the field of health services research, including a Career Scientist Award with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and an Early Research Award and Ontario Research Fund grant from the Ontario Government’s Ministry of Research and Innovation.

He provides ongoing scientific advice regarding the measurement of quality of care to national and international organizations, such as the Canadian Institute for Health Information, eHealth Ontario, Health Quality Ontario and the World Health Organization.
